rp² recently delivered an Abandon Wells on Paper (AWOP) workshop in Offshore USA, bringing together cross-functional teams to strengthen readiness for upcoming well abandonment operations.

The two-day session created a focused environment where teams could review plans, challenge assumptions, and align on execution priorities ahead of offshore activities. With participation from multiple disciplines, the workshop helped ensure that all stakeholders shared a clear understanding of the programme and the path to safe and efficient delivery.

Facilitated Technical Alignment Across Teams

Facilitated by John Sands, the workshop encouraged open collaboration and structured discussions across technical and operational teams.

Through a mix of presentations, breakout sessions, and plenary discussions, participants worked together to:

• Identify potential operational risks and interface challenges
• Review abandonment programme details and execution plans
• Strengthen coordination between rig crews, service providers, and technical teams
• Align on priorities and responsibilities before offshore execution

This collaborative approach allowed teams to surface key issues early and establish a more aligned and coordinated execution strategy.

Value of Open Discussion and Engagement

A key strength of the workshop was the level of engagement across participants. The format encouraged open dialogue, constructive challenge, and active contribution from all disciplines.

The informal yet structured environment helped create a space where teams felt comfortable sharing insights and raising concerns — ultimately improving communication, trust, and overall team alignment.

Participant feedback highlighted the value of this approach:

“Very valuable compared to other WOPs I have been involved in — much better participation.”

“Open, friendly communication is key to overcoming challenges and bringing out the best in a team.”

“The informal atmosphere helped build a feeling of camaraderie and ownership.”

Measurable Outcomes and Actionable Results

The workshop generated a total of 50 actionable items, reflecting the depth of discussion and collaboration throughout the sessions.

Key outcomes included:

• 15 key technical questions addressed during the workshop
• Input and collaboration from 56 delegates
• Improved alignment on operational risks and mitigation plans
• Enhanced coordination across company and equipment interfaces
• Increased confidence in the safe delivery of the abandonment campaign

These outcomes provided a clear and structured path forward for execution, ensuring teams were better prepared for offshore operations.

Supporting Collaboration Beyond the Workshop

In addition to technical outcomes, the workshop reinforced a strong “one team” mindset across all participants.

The open, collaborative environment helped strengthen working relationships and encouraged a shared sense of ownership — both critical for successful offshore execution.
