Dave Taylor owner of my-spread.com announces the new addition to my-spread.com - the technical discussion forum
my-spread.com has built a solid network of active industry members who together can answer most drilling questions that you might ever have. The main reasons why people visit the site and start to type on their keyboard is that they either have a problem, or can provide a solution. Others just like to follow the discussions, picking up knowledge or improving their industry understanding. This embodies the very essence of why the site was set up.
There are people who mostly have problems. There are others who rarely have a problem but enjoy giving back to the industry.
Why do they do this? Could it be that they:
- Have had experience of difficult situations, feel blessed that they got through them and want to pay this back in some small way?
- Enjoy the thanks, appreciation and accolades when they come up with innovative solutions and show their mettle?
- Want to keep their brains active even when they might be desk based, retired, or in a different section of the industry?
- Find that solving drilling problems are more satisfying than crossword puzzles?
Dave, has made investments over the years that he would be embarrassed to put an exact figure on. Suffice to say the amount goes into 6 figures, and that is in development and upkeep costs, his own time has been put in on top.
Why has Dave done this? Perhaps for the same reasons as the other contributors?
There has been a tremendous value exchange occurring over the past 11 years that my-spread.com has been online. The solutions provided to real work place problems must have prevented accidents, saved months of rig time, saved jobs and possibly lives.
That is a very good outcome for all of the people who have been helped by this website. The difficult task has been to find a financial mechanism to help fund the site’s running costs and future development and to allow a reward for Dave. Perhaps a small income from the site could help contribute to the running costs well into his retirement?
We all know about the ‘great crew change’ and the knowledge gaps that occur due to demographic and economic cycles. Wouldn’t it be great if my-spread.com could be the solution to this knowledge gap in the future? After all, there is no resource on the web quite like it…Moderated and with the facility to search historical exchanges of technical information.
Putting a Paypal donation button the site didn’t really work. Banner adverts or click ads all over the site are distracting and take away from the essence of the site.
Our challenge has been to think of an idea that is a win/win and one that we can help everyone make the forum a better place. A way that problem askers and problems solvers BOTH get a better experience, and the site itself can grow and continue to provide more value.

Giving something back
Living the Limit – Relentless Pursuit of Perfection supports brain cancer research. Harry Verkuil joins Cannonball 2016 to ride across USA on a 1919 Harley Davidson.
Harry and Team Scotland joins the 2016 Cannonball Run. A motorcycle race in the USA, 3400 miles from coast to coast on motorcycles, it has been a popular event since the 1970's.
Harry says:
"This year is special since this will be the Race of the Century, it is 100 years since the first registered coast to coast crossing. I¹m rider 57, of a total of 100 participating in this race. You might wonder why I would like to bust my bum for 3400 miles, a simple reason, to raise awareness and fund for brain cancer research.
Being diagnosed with a Glioblastoma brain tumour is like being given the death sentence and I would like to make a substantial difference by supporting research. While general cancer survival rate is ca. 86% only 3% of people diagnosed with a Glioblastoma will live past 5 years, however, with your brain being corrupted by the tumour, you will function as a hard disk with a virus.

Having lost a dear friend and colleague Dr. Ronan McElroy, to Brain Cancer, I did as others do, and donated to charity and the hospice he spent the last months of his life. Over the years we worked hard, played hard and pulled off some real exciting and challenging projects but foremost never gave up and put in all we had. For me looking back, a donation is not enough, and I had to do more. The stakes had to be higher and knowing Ronan, it had to be a challenge to 'Man and Machine' and as with all the projects we have done together, it had to start from scratch. At the end of 2014, I decided to do the Cannonball Run, knowing that I did not have a qualifying motorcycle and that all start numbers were already allocated.
Eight months later and one day before my 57th birthday I received my start number, number 57, however still without a motorcycle. Through 'relentless pursuit' I managed to get hold of a motorcycle which required a significant rebuild, a 1916 3-speed Harley Davidson F type, with side car, shipped in from Australia.
With lots of research and parts sourced and flown in from all the wind directions, the bike came on well and was shipped to the USA mid July for the September race. The race will be filmed with the objective to make a documentary."

Relentless Pursuit of Perfection donates to SPCA DBV, South Africa
Whilst on location in South Africa, rp-squared provided a donation to SPCA DBV one of the charities which SASOL supports in SA. SPCA DBV aim to prevent and eliminate all cruelty to all animals whose work includes animal cruelty prevention, care, sheltering, fostering and boarding and re-homing.
